Ear Wax Removal- Micrsosuction

Wax is a normal secretion of the outer ear canal glands. A build-up of wax can occur with ageing, hearing aid use, or those with narrow external ear canals. Excessive wax should be removed before it becomes impacted, which can give rise to tinnitus, hearing loss, vertigo, pain and discharge.

Microsuction uses specialised suction equipment to remove wax and debris from the ear canal under direct visualisation utilizing surgical magnification.

Microsuction is the safest and most comfortable method of ear wax removal. It is more convenient and safer than ear syringing. It is particularly valuable in patients who may not be suitable for ear irrigation (syringing). The ear canal is directly observed throughout the entire process ensuring no damage to the ear drum or ear canal. Suction removes wax and debris from the ear with pinpoint accuracy. No water is forced into the ear canal during the procedure dramatically reducing the risk of trauma and infection in the ear.
Microsuction can be used in delicate situations where irrigation must not be used including perforation of the eardrum. It is a dry, mess free procedure! A thorough ear examination is carried out before and after the procedure.


Some patients come when ears are blocked and some come regularly to keep their ears clean and in good health, as you would with your teeth at the dentist.


After meeting with our nurse you will be asked for a full history of your ear problems and the issues that brought you to the clinic. The procedure will be explained to you and with your consent the examination and procedure will continue. You will receive a full ear examination and if you are comfortable the microsuction procedure can proceed.

Time of procedure will vary from person to person and depends on if one or both ears need cleaned (from 15 mins to 45 mins). Written advice on aftercare will be provided after your procedure.

Some ear conditions preclude the use of microsuction.
These include but are not limited to- If you have experienced difficulties with the procedure in the past. A history of severe dizziness. If you are unable to keep your head still or you are prone to unpredictable head movements. If you have a sensitivity to loud noise (Hyperacusis). Patients on anticoagulants or steroids should inform our admin staff when booking and our nurse before undertaking the procedure.
