Cryotherapy

Cryotherapy requires no special preparation, and is a very quick and easy procedure usually only taking a few minutes.

Liquid nitrogen is usually applied to the skin by using a spray gun, by one of our fully trained specialists. It does not normally require a local anaesthetic, and lasts only a few seconds, the precise time depending on the thickness and size of the lesion. The frozen skin becomes white and takes one to two minutes to thaw to normal skin temperature. Often we suggest that the process is repeated once the skin has thawed out.

Over the next few days, a scab will form, and this will take one to two weeks to fall off. Usually, the treated area will eventually look normal, although scarring and discolouration is possible, particularly on the legs.
Depending on the type and size of the lesion, more than one treatment may be necessary, and this is usually repeated at regular intervals.

As with any procedure there can be risks or side effects.

Early risks can include some degree of pain or discomfort as the freezing spray is applied, usually this is minimal and rarely are any painkillers required.

Blistering, redness or swelling around the treated site can occasionally occur, again this often minimal and quickly settles. Very rarely infection requiring antiseptic or antibiotic.

Late risks include scarring, depigmentation (whitening)of the skin of the treated area, or rarely numbness.
Occasionally lesions can recur.
